The next Fallen Soldiers Ministries Service Dog has been chosen!

fosd-1We are pleased to announce that the next Service Dog sponsored by Fallen Soldiers Ministries has been chosen and is currently in training with Service Dogs of Florida.  She is a three month old Lab and Border Collie mix.  She was located at th SPCA Florida animal shelter after an exhaustive search and selection process.

All potential candidates are initially screened against a standardized test.  The test is used to demonstrate how willing the puppy is to learn, how well it responds to basic teaching techniques, and also determine temperament and attitude.  Puppies are then subject to a medical screening to make sure they don't carry any genetic defects or other underlying health issues that could shorten their life span or cause issues later in life.

spca-flNow that the puppy has been chosen, the actual training process begins.  Training will consist of both socialization and environment training.  The puppy will actually go through several trainers in different types of environment - from city to country - to prepare it for a variety of possible roles.  Although the initial screening is meant to identify exceptional candidates, the standards employed by Service Dogs of Florida are extremely high, and the dog must continue to perform will to advance through the program.

Fallen Soldiers Ministries raises funds continuously in the hopes of providing more Service Dogs for Wounded Veterans - if you would like to help please consider a donation today!  As soon as funds are raised for the next Service Dog we will immediately begin the process again - the list of Veterans waiting for a Service Dog is extremely long and constantly growing. Currently, only private organizations like Fallen Soldiers Ministries provide service dogs - the Veteran's Administration has ruled that they are not part of the medical program to help our Veterans.
