Biblical Counseling for Unfaithfulness in a Marriage

Biblical Counseling for Unfaithfulness in a Marriage

By Heather Eskridge, IABC Certified

I received a biblical counseling application for Miranda Tyson through Pure Life Ministries, where I am a biblical counselor. She was seeking counseling on how to biblically approach her husband’s infidelity.

Miranda had noticed Jason, her husband, had been drifting from the Lord, and she yearned for him to come back. However, all her attempts to reach him had fallen short.

Then Jason was awakened in the middle of the night by the Lord with a heaviness to confess his sins to Miranda. He shared he had been addicted to porn for years and had his first affair while stationed in Korea when serving in the military. He shared he had four other affairs while in the States as well. Miranda saw the heart transformation right away but decided to move in with her parents to process everything. It was at that time they found Pure Life Ministries, which is focused on bringing lasting freedom to those in sexual sin.

I encouraged her that the Lord loved her and cared about her broken heart and would use this for His glory as they both submitted to Him. Miranda understood this, and in the pain, she turned to Jesus and fully trusted Him. We worked through anger and fear. She was quick to apply Scripture to her life and confess those things before the Lord.

Jason and Miranda Tyson’s Testimony

When we were faced with the devastation of Jason’s confessed pornography addiction, a life in sexual sin, and adultery, we both knew the problem was bigger than us and we need help. We searched for help from our pastor, who referred us to a Christian psychologist. In desperation we made an appointment to see him.

After one session we left his office feeling more hopeless than ever. He had told us it would take at least six years for Jason to overcome his sexual sin and that we couldn’t get through this without his help. He told Miranda that the scripture the Lord led her to in Isaiah 43:18–19, "Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing," was taken out of context and it wasn’t time for that now.

So we tried to make our marriage work on our own. That led a separation with us living in two different states. But right before we separated, Jason found Pure Life Ministries from the book our pastor had given him: At the Altar of Sexual Idolatry. He printed out the application for their at-home program for us both. The program consisted of homework and biblical counseling. It was through that program and the help of counseling that we for the first time saw our sin the way the Lord saw it.

When we received the biblical counseling, we realized it was exactly what we had been looking for. We had wanted to know how to face this trial and overcome it according to God’s Word. We had wanted more of God’s opinion and less of man’s. Biblical counseling provided just that for us. We grew individually and as a couple.

Through counseling we studied 2 Timothy 3:16–17, " All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work," and realized how those words pointed to the value of biblical counseling.

It is by the grace of God that we can say we are still married and serving the Lord in our individual lives and together in ministry. Jason is now a licensed minister and Miranda is a certified biblical counselor.
